Notebook. ‘PERANAKAN TILES’ Series

$12.00

NEW! Our third notebook design features our lovingly photographed collage of vintage Peranakan tiles – our homage to a distinctive Singaporean community. Produced in Belgium, Germany and Britain, these Majolica tiles, as they were initially known, were so adored by the Peranakan community living in Malacca and Penang in the early 20th century that they began to feature prominently in their homes and shophouses. Soon they became widely known as Peranakan tiles.
‘Peranakan’ is a Malay word that means ‘locally born’. Many of the Peranakans are the offspring of alliances between Malay women and Chinese traders. These traders often migrated to British-controlled settlements like Singapore, Malacca and Penang.
The decorative tiles, which could be afforded by the more wealthy and prosperous, were used as artistic panels in porches, washstands; they also adorn shophouse facades, panels and courtyards.
The original Peranakan floor tiles were made from ceramic, and were carved and glazed expertly for durability.
They depicted oriental motifs such as flowers, fruit, fish and birds considered auspicious. In time however, both the motifs and method of production changed. Today’s tiles are mostly machine-printed with geometric designs, although they still use ceramic as the base of the tile.
Perfect as  a souvenir of Singapore, a small but elegant thank you gift or a corprorate door gift.   Isn’t it lovely to know that every time you gift one of these pretty notebooks, you are keeping a slice of local history and heritage alive?
